WHAT IS RESPITE CARE?When SOFESA is contacted about a family in need, we offer 3-5 nights in a motel to get them off of the streets in order to engage with them and begin a healing relationship. Respite means a short period of rest or relief from something difficult or unpleasant.
WHY IS RESPITE CARE IMPORTANT?Living on the streets or in your car is difficult. You go into what is called survival mode. You are never truly at rest, using your imagination or giving yourself the opportunity to dream. All of these things are necessary in healing, healthy growing and making good decisions for your family.
WHY NOT USE MOTELS ANYMORE?For 3 reasons:
1. Our belief in the best, first. We believe that homeless families deserve to have the best, first. They are constantly told and reminded of that they do not "deserve" nice things. They are used to getting used items and hand me downs, things the community discards. We are creating this respite space with this idea in mind - to give our homeless families the best, first and then to show them that they do truly deserve it. 2. Motels are an extension of the streets. The motels within our budget are really no different than the streets. Think of them as the street but with 4 walls. The motel environment is not always safe, especially for children or single women. Our respite tiny home is in a residential area behind property gates that provide our families with a safe, beautiful place to rest and recover. 3. Motels are expensive. The cost of creating a respite tiny home compared with the cost of motels makes this a no brainer. The tiny home will also be used as an AirBnb while not in use by our families. SOFESA's goal for this is to break even and cover the costs of running this respite tiny home. |
